Think cat. What would your home be like? Beds, hideaways, toys, litter boxes and food stations would figure prominently. Scratching posts, window perches and cat-formatted videos might also be high on the list. A nice family to give you love and attention when you want it and seclusion when you’d rather be left alone. A companion kitty or two might even figure into the mix.

Behaviorists call it the Environment of Plenty. Loosely translated into cat-speak, it means everything cats like and plenty of it. The Environment of Plenty works wonders in solving many common cat behavior issues. With a modicum of effort, your home can be a haven for you and your cats.

Here’s how it works: instead of tearing up the couch, she can frolic on her sisal-wrapped tower; rather than walking on your head when you’re trying to sleep, he can exert her nocturnal energies with a catnip body pillow. Grumbling at the water bowl? Multiple-cat households benefit from multiple drinking sources – in my home Harry has his fountain, Tinkerbelle has a pink Fiesta bowl, and Little has her glass on the coffee table.

About Mollie Hunt

I am the crazy cat lady, animal shelter volunteer, Trekkie, and mystery writer. I live in the rainy Pacific Northwest and will watch any TV show or movie filmed here. Even though I am of a goodly age (sixty-something) I go to Star Trek conventions in costume and am not afraid to be by myself. I enjoy my life in the cat lane. Words to live by: Spay and neuter; Live long and prosper; Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference.
